Conspicuous displays of personal wealth were de rigeur in 18th century Venice. Chandeliers were made in ever larger sizes, with extra decorations and lights, until they collapsed under their own weight. The solution was to build a frame, and to surround it with smaller pieces of conjoined glass. The vast chandeliers in the Rezzonico palace provided the name for this new style, which is still instantly recognizable today.
